Kanak
2008
Lasercut plywood, cotton string
Kanak was designed in response to the call for garments by the World of Wearable Arts competition for a new section inspired by Architecture. I took the opportunity with this garment to not only research the aesthetic inspiration of my chosen Architect Renzo Piano, but also the textural, form and lighting qualities invoked by my choice of material. This garment was further iteration of techniques I used with previous entries. The costume was initially juried for submission and then assessed again by the same panel of judges to be a finalist. The costume was placed 4th within the Architecture section, and won a special award as the runner up to the Shell- student award. The garment was completed while I was working full-time towards my design masters. The garment featured a two page full-colored spread in the recent World of Wearable arts book, the third in their series documenting the over 20 years history of the event.
