Takahe populations are dwindling, with approximately 200-300 birds predominantly located on offshore island reserves. Human intervention since their rediscovery has been stepped up to advance to the population. Biologists need to take an active role in the hatching of eggs, assessing them every few days to ensure they are still fertile and replacing eggs that had died. Humans brought predators to the Takahe, but without human intervention, the population is unlikely to survive.
