Wooden Lace

2007
Lasercut plywood, cotton string

Wooden lace was designed in response to the call for garments for the Avant garde section. The garment is constructed entirely of timer, stitched together. Designed digitally each piece is etched with detailed pattern designs. Inspired by the detailed designs of William Morris the garment sort to reinterpret highly detailed hand-made patterns using a digital format into an un-conformist material. The costume was initially juried for submission and then assessed again by the same panel of judges to be a finalist. Although Wooden Lace was only places fourth the World of Wearable Arts trust purchased the garment and have in on a rolling permanent display at the WOW gallery in Nelson. The garment featured a two page full-colored spread in the recent World of Wearable arts book, the third in their series documenting the over 20 years history of the event.
